Dr. Keun-Young Lee, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital gave a 30-minute lecture on ‘Cerclage vs progesterone to prevent preterm delivery’ at ‘Birth 2016’, the 4th International Conference on ‘Clinical Challenges in Labor and Delivery’ in Beijing, China, in April, 2016.
Premature birth, which occurs between 20 weeks of pregnancy and 37 weeks of pregnancy, is a notable medical field that takes 10 percent of the total number of pregnancy. Since an estimated 15 million babies are born prematurely and 1.1 million of them die from complications, United Nations chose premature birth as one of the tasks of Millennium Project.
Based on Dr. Lee’s papers and clinical experience, his lecture mainly focused on the argument about which is better between cervical cerclage and progesterone therapy for the ‘prevention’, the top issue in the field of premature birth. Additionally, he introduced a video on ‘Lee’s cerclage balloon’ for emergency cervical cerclage, which had been developed by Dr.Lee himself and patented in Korea, US and Japan.
