Hallym, UCLA Holds the First Joint Conference on Quality Improvement & Patient Experience

Hallym University Medical Center (HUMC) successfully hosted the 1st Joint International Conference with the UCLA Health under the theme of ‘Strategic Initiatives in Healthcare: Maximizing the Patient Experience through Clinical and Operational Improvements’ on September 14, 2015 at Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital.
HUMC organized the conference jointly with UCLA to seek active and future-oriented countermeasures in the rapidly changing medical environment by sharing advanced management know-how and expertise of UCLA Health, the top-class medical institution in the U.S.
Over 200 people from university hospitals in Korea attended the conference and showed great interest in UCLA's advanced management system for patient safety as there have been growing concerns about medical environment in Korea due to the recent MERS outbreak.
At the opening ceremony, Dr. Dai-Won Yoon, Chairman of Board of Trustees at Hallym University and Hallym University Medical Center noted, “Today’s conference carries two significant meanings to us. First, in this era of globalization, I consider our meeting with UCLA Health, an unrivaled global leader, as a valuable opportunity to learn advanced health care management. Second, this time will give us a precious chance to learn how to prepare for the future of medicine in the 21st century and how to build up our capabilities.”
Mr. Shannon O’Kelley, Chief Operating Officer of UCLA Health congratulated the opening of the conference by saying, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Hallym University Medical Center for their tremendous efforts in preparing this great event and I am very much honored to be able to take part in this conference and share the vision of UCLA Health with HUMC.”
The UCLA speakers shared their ideas and experiences on quality improvement and patient experience.
In the morning session, COO Shannon O’Kelley introduced UCLA’s unique management system, Ms. Christine Ahn, Director of Value Based Care Redesign explained ValU, UCLA’s strategic initiatives to improve quality and reduce cost, Mr. Michael Burke, Director of International Development presented TDABC at UCLA, and Dr. Christopher Saigal, Professor of Urology addressed value-based approaches at a clinical service.
In the afternoon session, Mr. Doug Niedwiecki, Executive Director of Operative Services presented UCLA’S care management, Mr. Tony Padilla, Chief Patient Experience Officer emphasized the importance of concentration on the patient experience and Ms. Robin Ludewig, Executive Director of Employee Recruitment and Retention explained the way of hiring employees to improve the patient experience.
On the same day, COO Shannon O’Kelley, Dr. Kyung-Ho Yu, Chief Medical Officer of Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital and Dr. Hee-Sung Yoon, Director of Management Strategy of Hallym University Medical Center had an interview with the Joon¬gAng Ilbo, one of major Korean dailies. In the interview, COO Shannon O’Kelley explained that the patient experience is not merely about high patient satisfaction or good facilities, but the overall medical quality that patients go through.
In addition, HUMC and UCLA Health have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop collaborations and exchanges in fields of shared interest and expertise.
