The following is a full-text of the opening address by Dr. Hae-Ran Lee, President of Hallym University Medical Center(HUMC), at the International Symposium for the 30th Anniversary of Hallym University on May 14, 2012, at COEX, Seoul:-Ed.

Chairman Yoon, President Hallberg,
Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am honored and privileged to be here with you to open the International Symposium for the 30th Anniversary of Hallym University.

On behalf of Hallym University Medical Center, I would like to thank all the participants for your presence today. Taking this opportunity, I also extend my sincere appreciation to President Hallberg of Uppsala University and Mrs. Hallberg for their generosity to accept our invitation to this meaningful occasion.

My thanks also go to prominent speakers from our affiliated institutions abroad - Professor Bernardi of Padova University, Professor Small and Professor Duff of Columbia University and Professor Nagata of Nagasaki University - and all Hallym speakers and chairs of the symposium for their time available to join us today.

Since its foundation in 1982, Hallym University has been striving to realize “A Mighty Hallym” to grow up one of the leading educational institutions and cultivate global talent under the catchphrase, “Small but Great.”

On the same lines, all faculty members at Hallym University Medical Center have been making concerted efforts to realize our dream of becoming one of the world’s top 100 medical institutions in 2015 by constructing the 6th hospital in Dongtan this October, and Ilsong Translational Research Institute in 2015.

Today, we are gathered here in Seoul both to celebrate Hallym’s 30th anniversary and share all of your extensive experiences and profound medical knowledge under the theme of “Frontiers in Translational Neurosciences: From Bench to Bedside.”

I am convinced that selection of today’s topic is very timely as the world has rapidly been entering an aging society. The meeting will be an excellent opportunity to discuss ways to combat neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, we feel it a great honor to listen to expert thoughts with Columbia University, Padova University and Nagaski University, among others.

In my capacity as President of Hallym University Medical Center, I would like to express my thanks to Chairman Yoon, President Hallberg, all speakers and chairs for being here with us.

Before closing, I would like to renew my gratitude to the organizers for their meticulous preparations for this event and I wish this meeting will be another big success.

Thank you.
