Hangang's Burn Experts Saves Filipino Kids

No.2344 Date2009-12-23 Hit 32687

Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital has recently invited two Filipino children who have been suffering from burn injuries to provide free burn surgery.

Monterola Lorna Joy, an eleven-year old girl, got injured by scald at her second year, and Abanil Carlo, a thirteen-year old boy was wounded when he fell on fire at the age of three. After their arrival on November 27, 2009, the two victims received skin graft, local flap to remove joint disorders by caring skin contracture and joint deformation for three weeks at the Hangang burn center. The hospital also gave advice to their parents for a follow-up care after their returning home.

This burn surgery was conducted by Hangang's medical support team while its volunteer work in Cagayan De Oro, the Philippines, to provide burn children with free medical treatment from November 8 to 11 this year. The team of five burn experts including Dr. Young-Chul Jang of plastic and reconstructive surgery, and Dr. Wook Chun of burn surgery, offered burn treatment and emergency surgery to 28 kids in the Philippines.

Dr. Young-Chul Jang, professor of the plastic and reconstructive surgery, said, "I felt pity for burn kids in the Philippines who were not properly cared due to poverty and insufficient medical support. Consequently, they were suffering from growth disability. I hope this kind of free medical treatment project could also benefit burn kids in the world who are not being properly treated due to heavy financial burdens."
