No.1787 Date2008-10-02 Hit 30982

President Anders Hallberg and Dr. Kjell Oberg, former dean of the faculty of medicine, Uppsala University, Sweden, and four other medical professionals are going to visit Hallym University Medical Center (HUMC) from October 8 to 11. During their stay, they will participate in "the First Hallym-Uppsala Collaborative Symposium" at the Lotte Hotel World on October 9, 2008 to discuss issues in medicine and surgery, and seek ways for future collaboration between Hallym and Uppsala.

Under the theme of "Current Issues in Medicine and Surgery: From Bench to Bedside," the symposium will cover a variety of issues from basic to clinical areas: an epidemiological analysis of chronic diseases including diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases, head and neck cancer, and a proton beam therapy.

During the conference, Dr. Lars Lannfelt, professor of public health and caring sciences, Uppsala University, will be interviewed by the Chosun Ilbo on Alzheimer's diseases, and Dr. Per-Ola Carlsson, associate professor in medical cell biology, Uppsala University, will also meet the JoongAng Ilbo to share his thoughts on engraftment of transplanted pancreatic islets.

Dr. Hae-Ran Lee, President of HUMC, noted, "This past February and May, Hallym and Uppsala delegates paid visits to both institutions to tap the possibility of mutual cooperation. To strengthen translational medicine which emphasizes the linkage between basic and clinical medical research, Hallym will be able to evolve into a world-renowned institution in the future."

Uppsala University, founded in 1477, is the oldest university in Scandinavia, northern Europe. For centuries, Uppsala has been holding an important place in science and medicine. Moreover, the university has played an essential role in shaping the Swedish culture and identity and has produced a number of Nobel Prize laureates since its foundation.
